[NEWSLETTER 3] 제19회 서울국제실험영화페스티벌 EXiS2022 개막작 안내 / EXiS2022 Opening Film

제19회 서울국제실험영화페스티벌이 이번 주 7월 14일 (금), 서울아트시네마에서 개막을 앞두고 있다. 올해 제19회 영화제를  맞이하여 코로나 팬데믹 이후 처음으로 개막식을 개최하면서 관객 및 영화 관계자들과의 만남을 기대하고 있다.

개막작으로는 팔레스타인 출신 카말 알자파리 감독의 <회상 (Recollection)>이 선정되었다. <회상>은 1960년대  후반에서 1990년대 중반 사이에 감독이 자란 지역 자파에서 촬영된 60여 편의 이스라엘과 미국 영화에서 감독이 발견한 이미지를 바탕으로 만든 작품이다.  그 이미지란 이제는 사라진 벽, 자동차, 건물, 상점, 골목, 주민 등과 같은 자파라는 공간에 대한 시각적 기록들이다. 이스라엘 영화 이미지를 디지털로 재편집함으로써 더 이상 존재하지 않는 도시의 이미지를 되살리는 감독은 이미지가 온전히 기억으로 변하는 순간을 만들어 낸다.

<회상>은 아카이브를 이용한 영화 만들기의 전형을 보여주면서 동시에  공적인 기록과 사적인 기억이 동기화되는 과정 자체가 작품이 됨으로써 다른 작품들과 분명한 차이점을 만들어낸다.

개막작 <회상>을 비롯하여 카말 알자파리의 대표 장편 및 단편이 영화제 기간 동안 상영되며, 감독과의 대화 시간도 마련되어 있다.  

The 19th Experimental Film and Video Festival in Seoul (EXiS) is about to open on Friday, July 14 this week. In celebration of the 19th Film Festival this year, the opening ceremony is held for the first time since the corona pandemic, and we are looking forward to meeting with the audience and film officials.

<Recollection> directed by Kamal Aljafari is selected as the Opening Film at the 19th EXiS.  

<Recollection> is a film created based on the images the director found in over 60 Israeli and american features shot in the town of Jaffa, the area where the director grew up between the late 1960s and the mid-1990s. Those images are visual records of the space called Jaffa, such as walls, cars, buildings, shops, alleys, and residents that have now disappeared. The director,  Kaml who revives the image of a city that no longer exists by digitally re-editing Israeli film images, creates moments in which the images are completely transformed into memories.

<Recollection> is positioned in the area of archive film practice and at the same tiem, the process of synchronizing public records and private memories becomes a work itself, creating a clear difference from other films.

Kamal Aljafari's representative features and short films will be screened during the festival, and there will also be artist-talk session with the director.
